desert flower

We watched a film called 'desert flower' in religion. The movie was based on a true story about a girl called Waris Dirie.
Waris Dirie is a woman from Somalia who ran away from an arranged marriage when she was very young. Waris had to travel through the desert for days until she got to then city and found some relatives. She was sent away to England to live with her uncle, the ambassador of Somalia. When war broke out in Somalia they abandoned her and went back to Somalia, leaving Waris in England alone. Waris then made friends with an English girl and stayed with her. Waris soon found out that being a girl in Somalia is extremely different to England. She discovered that girls in England are not forced into female mutilation  at a young age. Waris found a job in a fast food restaurant. While working there she was spotted by a famous photographer. Waris Dirie then became a very famous model. Near the end of the movie she tells her story to a magazine writer. She tells the editor of the magazine about the female mutilation in somalia. This story was published in the magazine.Waris was then invited to speak at a conference for the UN. She set up a campaign to stop this tradition in Somalia.
This movie had a big impact on me . I realised that I am very lucky to be a girl in Ireland. I also got a good insight into what life is like for a girl in Somalia. I learnt a lot about gender inequality which was good because this is the milenium development goal that i did my religion project on in September.
Here is a story board that I made with Emma and Ellen. The story board shows the most important scenes in the film in order of them happening.

If you want to see the other story boards from my class go to mrs.Leahys blog at http://www.stwolstansty.blogspot.com/2011/12/storyboarding-issue.html

  1. Well done Louise on your report about the film.

I am delighted with what you said "I realised that I am very lucky to be a girl in Ireland". Wouldn't it be wonderful if all girls were lucky to be a girl in what ever country they live in?

    Mrs L :)
